Kingston, one of our favourite cities in Ontario, is full of fun facts and things to do. For example, its nickname is “Limestone City,” and it was Canada’s first capital! Kingston is one of the best places to visit in Ontario for history buffs, foodies, and everyone between because of its connection to the past. Kingston is a great weekend getaway in Ontario!
There are plenty of free, paid, romantic, or fun ideas for kids, couples, or groups, from exploring the historic downtown to walking the Kingston waterfront! So, whether you’re looking for summer activities in Kingston in August or winter activities in January, we’ve got you covered!

1 1000 Island Boat Cruise
The 1000 Island Boat Cruise is another popular activity that departs from near the Visitor Centre. There are many boat tours available, some of which last only a few hours while others last all day. Some involve sunset dinner cruises on various boats. You can select one and plan based on cost and timelines. The live guitarist was fantastic, the audio commentary was informative, and the sun shone all day on the top deck!
2 Visit Princess Street
Princess Street is the place to go if you want to go shopping. Princess Street is a very long street that runs all the way through downtown to the waterfront. Downtown Princess Street is also located on a hill that slopes down to the water! Princess is fantastic because there are so many shops on the street. Many of them are local businesses that sell everything from food to artisan crafts, clothing, and more! The streets that connect to Princess are also full of interesting places to visit. Many of the larger chain stores, such as Gap, can also be here, but you didn’t come to Kingston to shop at popular stores, did you?
3 Classic Kingston Pub
Summer in Kingston would not be complete without a drink on an outdoor patio. , there are many fantastic local bars and pubs to visit. Many of them in our post on Kingston bars and pubs. You can also check out Jack Astor’s right downtown for the experience alone, as they have a huge rooftop patio overlooking Springer Market Square. As before stated, the views are nice for a summer evening, but if you’re in Kingston, try to “spend local.” a thought.

4 Historic Fort Henry
Want to learn about Canada’s military history at one of the most significant sites? Then Fort Henry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an absolute must-see when in Kingston! Fort Henry is part of the “Kingston Fortifications National Historic Site,” which is a larger historical site. This site includes the old fortifications around Kingston Harbour as well as the Rideau Canal’s entrance. Aside from Fort Henry, historic sites in the area include the Shoal Tower (right on the waterfront downtown), the Murney Tower, and the tower/walls of Fort Frederick, which is close to the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC).
5 Take a Kingston Walking Tour
Because Kingston has so much to offer, you can take one of the many Kingston walking tours. Everyone’s interests and fitness levels are catered to! , you can go on Historical Kingston walking tours, bike tours, Kingston Food and Beer Tours, and even The Famous Haunted Walk of Kingston – Ghost Tour. While many of these tours go from near the Tourist Centre, you should double-check the tour website or inquire when booking your ticket in case! The dome of historic city hall dominates the waterfront across from the Visitor Centre. It’s a lovely structure, and you can take a self-guided tour inside.

6 The Agnes Etherington Art Centre
The Agnes Etherington Art Centre, located on the Queen’s University campus, is a public art gallery with a large collection of art on display. It may appear small, but it contains three Rembrandt paintings! The Agnes is near the Trolley Tour stop on Queen’s Campus. If you want to learn more about The Agnes, admission is free, and donations are always appreciated.
7 Queen’s University
Since its start in 1841, Queen’s has been one of Canada’s oldest post-secondary institutions. If you’re keeping score, this makes it older than Canada! Eric attended Queen’s and also worked for the school in various capacities. One of them happened to be a university tour guide. This is one of the reasons he adores Kingston and has stayed for a decade. Queen’s has student-led tours, but they toward students interested in studying there. So you can walk around and do a self-guided tour. The campus is beautiful, with green space at Summerhill and a waterfront nearby.
8 Kingston Waterfront Trail
You can walk along the Kingston waterfront if you want to get some fresh air. The Kingston Waterfront Trails are 8 kilometres long and part of a much longer 900-kilometer trail that runs from Niagara Falls to Quebec. In the summer, there are benches, tables, and even a pier area where people can swim. If the weather is nice, hang out by the water – and watch the cold wind off the ice in the winter!

9 Kingston Mills Locks
If you want to get away from downtown for a while, head north to the Kingston Mills Locks on the Rideau Canal. This set of locks, which in the 1820s, is part of the waterway that runs all the way to Ottawa. The area isn’t particularly exciting, but the locks are a World Heritage Site, and there’s a visitor centre. If you want to experience Canadian nature, the green space is ideal for a picnic. If you are new to Canada, the drive alone is worth the trip!
10 Explore City Park
City Park is a large green space located between Queen’s University and downtown Kingston. The park is vast, with paths leading in all directions. There are plaques and monuments throughout the city, including the one pictured above, where you can learn about the history of the city. The Frontenac Country Courthouse, located at the park’s northern end, is a massive and beautiful structure. The park has a play area for children as well as a splash pad for the summer. They build two rinks for hockey and public skating in the winter.
11 Hike Lemoine Point
If you want to get away from downtown without venturing too far north or outside of Kingston, Lemoine Point might be the place for you. This conservation area, located west of downtown, near Kingston Airport, is a nice little nature getaway. The parking lot is large, and the trails are. There are many paths to choose from, ranging from dense woodland trails to open fields. There are even some that provide excellent views of the water (Collins Bay) and others that take you right to the lake’s shore.
12 The Boiler Room
Go to The Boiler Room for a quick workout! This popular climbing location has relocated from across town to a brand new location. It’s a fantastic climbing gym for climbers of all skill levels. If you have children, it could be a great place for them to burn off some energy. Because it is indoors, it is also a great activity for all seasons. Whether you’re new to climbing or a seasoned pro, the staff is friendly and eager to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience!
