Goth Subculture:

Goth subculture is basically a group of people who follow everything that is in gothic style. From dresses such as gothic blouse, gothic cape, women’s gothic jacket (Gothic Jacket Women’s) and so on to accessories and jewellery, everything is gothic in style. Goth subculture came into existence with the rise of punk rock bands that rose to prominence in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The theme and motif of this subculture is an amalgamation of horror and Victorian romanticism. It has got its influence from the gothic architecture, gothic literature and gothic art that came into existence in Europe during the Middle Ages, between 13th century to 16th century. It was during this period that gothic architecture became immensely popular that further gave rise to a new genre in literature called gothic fiction. Although goth subculture draws its inspiration from gothic architecture, gothic literature and gothic art, goth fashion has drawn its inspiration from the punk rock bands of the ‘70’s and the ‘80’s that are aesthetic and rebellious.

Goth Fashion:

The theme of goth fashion is dark, expressive, dramatic, bold, spooky and mysterious. The dresses that are used in goth fashion are homogenous. People mostly wear clothes that are either black in colour or are dark in colours. The makeup is also dark, that includes dark and smokey eyes, dark coloured lipsticks and pale skin. The hair is sometimes messy and sometimes tied in a bun. It is either dyed with black colour or is bleached and dyed with some other bold and vibrant colours. Body piercings, occult jewelleries and tattoos are also given importance.

1980’s:

The gothic outfit during this era had got its inspiration from the Victorian era. The dresses were classic and aesthetic that included dresses with open lacy sleeves and ruffled high collars. The hairstyle was messy and dishevelled.

1990’s:

It was the era of cybergoth that included dresses in dark colours such as black, red, purple, orange and burgundy. The dresses included leather skirts and corsets. Goggles and sleeve tattoos were other accessories that were given importance.

2000’s:

This era saw the amalgamation of ghoulishness and romanticism in gothic fashion. In fact, the models were called “glamorous ghouls”. Structured gowns, flowy gowns and leather dresses in black were highly famous. Also people would dye their hair in neon and dark colours.

2010’s to 2020’s:

The contemporary goth fashion is elegant, simple and decent. The makeup is simple and perfect and the dresses include silky, glossy and gleaming gowns. The jewellery is also minimal; but body piercing and tattooing are important.
